Eck and Jenn Pfenning along with Andrew Martin and a dedicated group of volunteers cleared trails on the Baden Hills in October. The trail off of Sandhills Road officially opened to the public on Nov. 27.

The latest trail to open in the Wilmot-wide system runs through Gibney Regional Woods on the Baden Hills. The 3 km trail can be picked up at the township yards on Sandhills Road where a parking lot has been built for convenience.

“The Baden Hills trail is a labour of love from the Wilmot Trails Advisory Committee and the volunteers who helped,” said Township Councillor Jenn Pfenning. “This is just the beginning. I hope to see more investment in trail development…in the years to come. The full parking lot this weekend shows just how much our community needs this.”

A stone dust trail winding from the parking lot to the wooded area, approximately a half kilometre away, leads to the moderate to steep hiking trails. These trails traverse one of the four glacier-made kames that make up the highest elevation point (1440 feet above sea level) in the township.

The Baden Hills’ trail is a project partnership between the Township of Wilmot and the Region of Waterloo and is supported by a one million dollar fund donated by the Schout Corporation.
